PS IS 218 The Rafael Hernández Dual Language Magnet School located in the South Bronx, is a shining example of what can happen when a community comes together for education. Opened in 1999, the school was created by Bronx politicians, community leaders and parents who wanted a school where children could learn in both Spanish and English.
The idea for the school began in 1995 when local leaders recognized the need for bilingual education for Puerto Rican families and other ethnic groups in the Bronx. Many Puerto Ricans had moved to the area looking for better lives since the 1930s, and they wanted a school that would help their children succeed. In 1996, community leaders approached the Board of Education to propose a dual language magnet school.
After years of planning, construction began on May 29 1997, at the site of the old Morrisania Hospital, which had served immigrant families since the 1920s. The school opened in August 1999, with The first president of the school was Mr. Keinos, followed by Ms. Rosario, who became principal in 2006. Dr. Caceres later took over as principal in July of 2014.
218 serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade, providing a caring environment that focuses on strong relationships between students and teachers. The school aims to help students develop the skills they need to be responsible, bilingual citizens. Over the years, the school has adapted to changes in education, moving from a magnet school to a zoned school in 2004, while still welcoming students from all backgrounds.
In its twenty plus years 218 has graduated thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to attend top high schools in New York City such as the Bronx High School for Science, Stuyvesant High School, Regis High School and Cardinal Hayes High School. 218’s focus on bilingual education has not only helped its students but has also enriched the Bronx community.
Today 218 continues to thrive serving as an important resource for families in the area. It represents the power of community effort and the importance of providing quality education for future generations.
