As an actress in the play, I have to say that the play was one of the best ending experiences of my middle school career. This year, our school’s play was “High School Musical Jr.” The play is about a boy named Troy Bolton, a popular high school basketball player, and Gabriella Montez, a shy, smart, and quiet new student. The story shows how they start an unexpected romance and how they challenge the social cliques and expectations at their school by auditioning for the lead roles in the school musical Romeo and Juliet. As they work together, they inspire their classmates to break out of their usual roles and show their true talents . The movie teaches lessons about friendship, being yourself, and following your dreams, all while featuring fun songs and dance numbers.
The first show was April 2, 2025 and ran until April 5th, 2025. The play was held in the auditorium of the P.S./I.S. 218 Rafael Hernandez Dual Language Magnet School. The director of the play was Ms. Boland and the co-directors of the play were Mr. Hurvitz and Mr. Alvarez.
Elairis Marte played Taylor McKessie in the play High School Musical Jr. From her experience being in plays (she has also been in two other school productions), she finds it exciting and thrilling in the beginning, but the more days pass and the closer the day of the show gets, the more nerve-racking it can be. Her favorite part of the play is being able to have a good time with her friends and being in rehearsal with them. She also loves singing and dancing. Elairis declares “Musicals are something everyone should try.”
James Echevarria was a props master. He wanted to become part of the backstage crew members because he wanted a behind the scenes role. Helping set up backstage, he found it interesting how the play slowly comes alive. James Echevarria reflected, “I love the play and seeing it come together.”
