In PS 218, there are a great variety of clubs that kids can choose from. These clubs give students a chance to grow their passions when they are bored. One of the clubs at our school that helps students develop their passion to draw, color, and paint is the Art Club. The Art Club, founded by our art teacher, Mr. Dela Cruz, gives students the opportunity to participate in after school art activities in order to mature their art skills. He teaches his club members multiple drawing and coloring techniques in order to help them create better art. Right now you might wonder “Why did Mr. Dela Cruz decide to create the Art Club?”
The main reason was to offer his students an opportunity to practice their art skills more often. As a teacher, he has met multiple students that do have a passion for art. “I wanted to give students the opportunity to grow their art techniques and to spend more time in the art room,” Mr. Dela Cruz says, but due to his schedule, he only teaches his middle school students during the fall. It might sound like a lot of days to teach, but he only meets his classes once every week. Due to obstacles like these, Mr. Dela Cruz decided to create the Art Club, which gave his students the opportunity to develop their passion for art.
Art club member Katie Ramos reflects, “When I first started drawing anything I felt like I was going straight forward into what I wanted to draw, but I wasn’t sure how to make a drawing step by step. When I decided to join the club I started drawing better and better, little by little, and now I can make drawings the way I want thanks to Mr.Dela Cruz and his advice.” Mr. Dela Cruz’s Art Club continues to grow the love for art of his 30+ members like Katie Ramos.
What’s next?
Mr. Dela Cruz’s Art Club continues to develop many of his students’ passions and art skills every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Mr. Dela Cruz’s hope for the Art Club as in years past is to create props and sets for this year’s play which is called “Beetle Juice.” Mr. Dela Cruz’s Art Club helps students find their passion and also expand the artistic potential of his students. His Art Club is an important part of our school community and many students are glad that it is.
